The new Volkswagen Golf GTI is now available to order, with a starting price of £25,895. This makes it £195 more expensive than the car it replaces. Both three and five-door Golf GTIs are available and, for the first time in the model’s history, the GTI is offered with two power outputs. A 2.0-litre turbocharged direct-injection petrol engine, with a choice of six-speed manual or six-speed DSG gearbox, powers all models. However, while the standard model develops 217bhp, the new GTI Performance model develops 227bhp. Both cars feature the same 350Nm of torque.
The standard GTI completes the 0-62mph sprint in a claimed 6.5 seconds and has a top speed of 152mph, while the GTi Performance car is a tenth faster to 62mph and can hit 155mph flat out. Both cars return the same fuel economy figures. The manual model returns a claimed average of 47.1mpg and CO2 emissions of 139g/km, thanks to stop-start tech as standard, which means the new GTI is 18 per cent more efficient than the car it replaces. Cars with the DSG gearbox return a claimed average of 44.1mpg, although the standard GTI emits 148g/km of CO2, while the GTI Performance emits 149g/km.
